In the spirit of the Lunar New Year celebrations which adorned this special themed chapter meeting, she shared that doing spring cleaning before Chinese New Year has always been a common tradition. Other than the obkvious benefit of beautifying and creating the ambience, spring cleaning is also about going back to simplicity. When we declutter and get rid of what is unnecessary, we can be more effective and see more clearly, thus keeping the focus on what is truly necessary and meaningful to us. Making progress in our Toastmasters journey is also simple. We need to focus on the basics – attending the chapter meetings, preparing and delivering speeches, and taking up roles, by doing these over time we will see the progress we have made.

Opening address by Club President
Club President, Neo Yen Ping shared the story of two rabbits, Wanda the Wise and Frank the Foolish. We learnt that we should search for the deeper truth, beyond what is apparent – the old adage ‘don’t judge a carrot by its leaves’.
Coming to conclusions based on visual inspection alone, such as whether the one with bigger leaves or smaller leaves has the bigger carrot underground, can be inaccurate. There are other factors involved, such as smell, etc.
Wanda the Wise had the ability to always pick the bigger carrot, but she was magnanimous enough to use her wisdom to pick out the bigger carrot for her friend Frank.

Special Presentation – The Successful Club Series – Mentoring

Pravin Mishra, CC, CL delivered a special presentation on the topic of mentorship, particularly how it works in the Toastmasters setting. He shared his personal experiences on how his mentor helped him ease into the flow of Toastmasters meetings and nudged him along to deliver his first speech, take up roles, and feel welcomed in club meetings.

A mentor takes a personal interest to help his mentee, and serve as a role model. He helps to boost the new member’s confidence, helps them to learn the protocol, introduce the new member to other club members, and helps the new members refine their speaking skills.

Experienced club members are also welcome to approach other club members directly and request them to be a mentor if there are certain aspects which they are working to improve and feel that they can benefit from the mentor’s inputs.

The mentors themselves learn how to coach and motivate others and learn the art of giving appropriate feedback to help and encourage their mentees. The club also benefits from the mentorship program by boosting membership as well as members retention, leading to more satisfied and mutually supportive club members.
